With the appearance of a dark circle, eyes can seem much older than they should. In addition to this, dark circles also can give the impression of tiredness, stress or illness so it is not surprising that they are one of the most common skin complaints in North America.

Fortunately, once the cause of the under eye circles has been determined, there are a number of remedy options available. For most people, dark circles under the eyes are a temporary symptom, sometimes caused by lack of sleep, allergies or maybe a reaction to a prescription medication. If this is the case, the under eye area can be given an instant boost by placing a cold compress over the eyes and using a good cosmetic skin blemish concealer. Many under eye concealers now contain light-refracting pigments that brighten the area, and most are not as ‘cakey’ and heavy-looking as they used to be. However, it is essential to select a concealer shade that has a yellow base in order to counteract the bluish, bruised look of under eye dark circles.

While it is true that dark circles are more prevalent as the skin ages, there are still some solutions to repair and prevent damage to the under eye area. It is wise to select an under eye cream or gel that contains a balance of skin nourishing vitamins, natural skin lighteners and collagen-boosting ingredients. One particularly helpful ingredient is Hesperidin, a citrus derived flavanoid that works to constrict and reduce any broken blood vessels that are visible under the thin, delicate under eye skin.

It is also essential to treat dark circles from within by keeping the skin well hydrated and fed with an anti-oxidant rich diet. Iron and vitamin K supplements are beneficial as is reducing the amount of dietary sodium. By taking preventative steps and naturally treating the dark circle, eyes will soon become brighter, refreshed and more youthful in appearance.
