The problem of dark circles under the eyes is one of the most common skin complaints in the U.S. and as such, there are a number of recommended ways to treat them.
To find the best dark circle treatment, one must first determine exactly what the cause is, as often it may not be as simple as lack of sleep. Any type of problem with the kidneys, liver or thyroid can contribute to the eye circles, as can a reaction to a prescription medication. If this is the case, it would be wise to discuss alternative medications with a doctor.
For anyone who has a darker skin type, dark circles under the eyes can be due to uneven skin tone caused by an excess of melanin. There are several eye cosmetics that help remedy this problem, including under eye treatments that gently bleach the eye area over time, or alternatively, cosmetic eye concealers that lighten the area immediately. Correct application of any under eye concealer is imperative; a heavy handed approach can sometimes result in ‘raccoon’ eyes, particularly if the tone of the makeup is not correct for the skin color.
Some people prefer to use an under eye cream to diminish dark circles, which will be more permanent and may even help treat other skin conditions such as under eye puffiness and wrinkles. Most under eye creams used to treat dark circles will contain vitamin C that helps strengthen the skin and repair damage to the area. A substance such as Hesperidin will work to constrict broken blood vessels, which are one of the leading causes of dark circles under the eyes. Constricting enlarged or ‘leaking’ capillaries will result in them being less visible through the thin eye skin, thus making the entire under eye area seem lighter and more refreshed.
